Project '68 El Camino

"The WEEKEND WARRIOR"

I do all of my own body and paint work. The thumbnails below will show the steps I took to complete the body work and then prep the Elky for the Black Cherry paint job.

Saved this Elky from a wrecking yard in Reno NV October 1990. Hit on front right fender. No motor, tranny or wheels. I fixed the front end, installed new motor, tranny and wheels. Then drove it home to Colorado.

Started this long project by cutting a hole in hood to fit over the tunnel ram.

Fixed the rust, filled the front marker light, did body work on the fenders and primed them.

Fixed some more rust.

Stripped more of the paint from the car. Body work was finished on the door then primed.

Finished body work on right door, both quarter panels then applied etch primer.

Finished body work on roof, fixed rust around rear window and etch primmed. Painted rear window interior deck Gloss Black.

The Elky has now been block sanded and primered twice.

Block sanded and primed again. Pictures were taken on my trip from Colorado to Reno Nevada. Removed the 2/4 carb set to save $ on gas.

Block sanded and primed one last time.

Final guide coating.

Stripped all the paint in the bed.
Bed is spayed with metal etching primmer.

Stripped the paint off of the inside of the tailgate.

Painted the cowl, front fender jambs and the underside of the hood.

Painting the taigate jamb and front bumper valance.

Preparing drivers door for painting the jamb.

Preparing passenger door for painting the jamb.

Preparing the drivers door jamb for paint.

Preparing the passengers door jamb for paint.

Door jambs and tailgate jamb painted.

Inside of doors with paint on them.

After the paint fog cleared.

Time to remove the old 12 bolt.

In with the new shortened 9 inch.

A few minor modifications and the 9 inch rearend fits perfect.

Now we have all wheel disk brakes and fat tires stuffed into the stock wheel wells.

2/4's back on and running again.

Inner fenders stripped and painted Gloss Black.

Final sanding the primmer getting ready for some color.

Masking the hood jambs.

Finishig the masking job. The Elky is finally ready for a Black Cherry paint job.

After 8 hours in the paint booth the Elky looks real good.

Some more paint booth pics. Love that shine.

Fresh out of the paint booth and into the sun for the first time.

Getting the paint job approval from my buddies.

Taking the buffer to the the paint for that deep shine.

Babies first bath.

Lots of reflection..

Taking pics from all angles.

Putting the parts back on.

More parts put back on the car.

Few more parts to go.

Almost ready for Hot August nights Reno, NV. 1991.
