Project '69 SS Chevelle

I do all of my own body and paint work. The thumbnails below will show the steps I took to complete the body work and then prep the SS for a Deep Black paint job.

This SS Chevelle still had the original paint on it. There was a few rusted areas on the car. This car took me around nine months to complete.

Started this long project by removing the hood and front fenders.

I took the car down to the shop a gave it a real good cleaning with a steam cleaner.

I removed the motor/transmision, all of the interior and the glass.

Cut the rust out of the front fenders. Preped them, then welded in a new custom made patch panel.

I stripped all to paint off of this car. The car originally had a vinyl top so the lead work was rough. Also fix some rust around the rear window.

The next three picture groups show the steps taken to repair the rust on the left rear quarter panel. I cut out the rust then I cut the patch panel to fit the rusted area only.

I welded the patch panel into place using a mig welder. I grinded the weld and preped it for filler. Then I prepared to fix the rust on the other quarter panel.

I repeated the same steps for fixing the rust on the right rear quarter panel. I welded the patch panel into place using a mig welder. I grinded the weld and preped it for filler.

Block sanding filler everyone's favorite past time. Right front fender is ready for primer.

Black etching primer is used for the first couple of coats. Then a grey filler primer to block sand on. Left front fender is ready for primer.

Finished bodywork on the left fender and hood. Applied etching primer and filler primer on both panels.

Finished bodywork on the rest of the car. Now ready for some etching primmer.

Applied etching primer to the mass of the car.

Applied filler primer to the body of the car. Block sanded and primered the body a couple times. I painted the car off the frame during the process of getting the frame redone. I Tore it all down, sandblasted it and painted it. Then put it back together with new parts.

Nice new frame to slide under the shinny black body.I painted the entire car inside and out all at the same time. The hood and fenders were off the car but in the booth with the car. It came out great.

I put the fenders, hood and tail light housings back on the car. Then I sanded the clearcoat with fine sandpaper. Took it to my work to use a nice paint booth to sprayed clear all over it again. It was a challenge to keep this car wet with paint while I Cleared everything inside and out. This car has no tape lines at all.

The paint looks great as the car is starting to come together.
Everything was put back together on this car before giving the keys back to my friend Fred. He was one happy camper that day.
